Powrot do spisu tresci

Thank you for visiting the Internet Museum of the Polish People's Republic (Polska Ludowa or PRL).

Polish People's Republic lasted from 1944 (when the Soviets installed first puppet government), through 1989 when first free election after the World War II was held. Forty five years of communism were terrible times for the majority of Poles. Thousands of people lost their lives as a result of the government terrorism, millions were scarred, physically or emotionally.

For many Poles the name Polska Ludowa or PRL (Polish People's Republic) is a synonym of dark ages. The Republic was everything, but People's. The people enjoyed very few rights. Food coupons, restrictions in personal movement, and overwhelming communist propaganda were everyday facts.

Now, over 15 years after regaining freedom, many Poles, unfortunately, have forgotten what their life was like under communism. On these web pages, we tried to collect as many documents, recordings and other material as we could find, to refresh everybody's memory. We do not intend to draw any historical conclusions. We believe anybody viewing these pages can do it him/herself.

This Museum is an open-ended project; we add materials as we get them.

This website is maintained in the Polish language only as it is mainly indented for the Polish audience. However, if you need specific information on the Museum or on any material presented here, please feel free to email the Curator. We will do our best to help.
